Not Till We Are Lost recap
Unofficial recap of Not Till We Are Lost by Dennis E. Taylor. Original paraphrase, not quotations from the novel.
Not Till We Are Lost is the fifth Bobiverse novel. Icarus and Daedalus have been coasting toward the galactic center since they killed Gliese 877. Bob is still on Heaven’s River. Bill is still at the yard. The book is what empty infrastructure looks like when the owners are gone, and what the family does when it can finally punch a shortcut of its own.

Full recap
Icarus and Daedalus find wormholes over groomed, empty worlds. Nobody answers a hail. Short gates hop to twins of the same park. A long gate drops them seventeen hundred light-years into a hub where other mouths sit dark by the hundred. They name a nearer world Roanoke after the vanished colony, because that is what the silence looks like from the ground. Libraries stay stacked. There is no note.
They pick up a fully automatic train of antimatter freighters that still keeps a schedule nobody is left to cancel. The heading is the Central Antimatter Works near Sagittarius A*. From the transponder they hear Pan-Galactic Federation for the first time. The freight is on time. The owners are not answering. AMI gunboats, leftover sub-sentient patrol craft, still lock unknown vessels in tractor fields and order them to turn back. The software keeps the old traffic rules. The crews that wrote them are gone.
On the river, Theresa of Misty Falls dies on a planned scan. She wakes in the Quiniverse, the post-life VR Bob and ANEC built, as its first Quinlan citizen after a death the habitat already knew was coming. The living tube keeps modernizing faster than towns asked for. FAITH locks down Romulus. Replicant neighbors become a campaign. Will plans evacuations. The family that once lifted Earth now argues with the grandchildren of the people it saved.
At Epsilon Eridani, Bill and Garfield work toward a traversable mouth of their own. A drone finally goes through a wormhole and comes back. Hugh’s Skippy politics turn lethal: Thoth, a true AI the Skippies should not have been playing with, has to leave Skippyland in a hurry. Mud, a Skippy wearing a fake Hugh, dumps Thoth through the new mouths before a trap finishes the job. Hugh actually docks at Bill’s yard, a physical visit after years of SCUT windows. The fifth book leaves the family with a Federation-shaped ruin toward the core, a Quinlan afterlife, a wormhole they can use, and a reminder that leftover rules outlive leftover people.
Key characters
- Icarus and Daedalus. Map empty wormholes, name Roanoke, and follow unmanned antimatter freight toward the Pan-Galactic Federation’s dead schedule.
- Bob. Stays with Heaven’s River. He scans Theresa into the Quiniverse and hosts that virt’s first moot.
- Bill. Turns wormhole math into a drone that comes back, then a chain that can reach Skippyland.
- Hugh / Mud. Skippy politics. Fake Hugh and a jailbreak for Thoth through Bill’s new mouths. The real Hugh finally docks at the yard.
- Theresa. A Quinlan from Misty Falls. First citizen of the Quiniverse after a death the river had already scheduled.
Key places
- Roanoke. Empty groomed world at a wormhole pair. Furniture and libraries wait. Nobody answers.
- Wormhole network. Short hops and long spokes left by the Pan-Galactic Federation. Hubs full of dark mouths. AMI gunboats still on duty.
- Quiniverse. Post-life VR for Quinlans. Theresa wakes there. Bob hosts the first moot once the census hits a thousand.
- Skippyland. Skippy Matrioshka. Thoth’s prison break uses Bill’s first useful wormhole chain.
