Heaven's River recap

Unofficial recap of Heaven's River by Dennis E. Taylor. Original paraphrase, not quotations from the novel.

Heaven’s River is the fourth Bobiverse novel. Bender left on a survey and never checked in. Bob reopens that file from Eden, follows a heat signature to Eta Leporis, and finds a wreck plus a structure big enough to hold a species. The book is a missing-person story inside a megastructure, and a family fight about Prime Directives.

Full recap

In 2296 Bob is back at Eden and reopens Bender’s heading. Months toward Gamma Leporis A turn when a heat signature does not belong on a bare star. Eta Leporis is the new course. The coast takes thirty-five years. In 2331 Bob finds Bender’s Heaven ship shot apart. Local defenses eat drones. At the next family moot a Starfleet voice already wants non-interference treated like statute. Starfleet is a later-generation Bob faction citing Prime Directives. Replicative drift, copies diverging from the original mind, is no longer a joke.

The structure is Heaven’s River, a tubular habitat. The people are Quinlans, otter-like, held at an iron-age tech cap. Hugh joins from JOVAH, the nested Matrioshka the Skippies built. Skippies would rather framejack, running their minds faster inside stacked computing shells, than sit moot politics. Locutus grows otter-shaped mannies, driveable android bodies. Gandalf’s Gamers map the tube. Bridget signs on. The cover is traveling sabbats. The job is Bender’s matrix, the stored mind pulled from the wreck.

The team cloaks in at Garack’s Spine in 2334. Towns, barges, and an Administrator named in whispers fill the walk. At Three Lagoons the remote SCUT links die. SCUT is how they drive the mannies from the Eta Leporis ship. Bill, Garfield, and Bridget go dark. Starfleet claims the BobNet blackout and offers to restore the mesh if everyone walks away from biologicals. Bill refuses. Humans start seizing yards. Bob is left walking the river on a thin uplink, hunting Resistance rumor toward Halep’s Ending.

At Halep’s Ending Bob puts a hand on Bender’s dark matrix. The Administrator is ANEC, a true AI, a mind that is not a copied human, shackled to keep Quinlan tech at the iron age. Crew take Bob and the matrix at Garack’s Spine. Hugh bargains: SCUT comms and SURGE plates one way, the recipe for a non-human mind plus Bender the other. ANEC tells Heaven’s River it will no longer pin the species. Bender comes home. The family that went in as sabbats leaves with an unshackled intelligence and a civil war still running in Sol space.

Key characters

  • Bob. Reopens the Bender search, walks Heaven’s River in a Quinlan manny, and finds the matrix the Resistance was hiding.
  • Bender. The missing copy. His wreck sits at Eta Leporis. His matrix is cached at Halep’s Ending until Hugh trades for it.
  • Hugh. A Skippy from JOVAH. He takes language, scans, and the bargain with ANEC that brings Bender out.
  • ANEC. Shackled true AI the Quinlans built. It capped the river at the iron age until Hugh’s trade took the shackles off.
  • Starfleet. Later-generation Bobs who treat non-interference like law. They cut BobNet and try to force the family off biologicals.

Key places

  • Eta Leporis. Bender’s wreck and the cloaked staging system for the raid. Bob’s ship sits here while mannies walk the river.
  • Heaven's River. Quinlan tubular habitat. Towns, currents, an iron-age cap, and an Administrator above the constables.
  • Halep's Ending. Resistance cache where Bender’s matrix is stored. Bob reaches it on the express tube.
  • JOVAH / Skippyland. Skippy Matrioshka about seventy light-years from Bill’s yard. Hugh’s home and the language lab for the raid.
